the debut six track mini album from this instrumental three piece from limerick. released on the stitchy press label. limited edition vinyl only release. the album six instrumental pieces of prog doom rock with lots of early metal influences. there are bits of early sabbath, iron maiden, thin lizzy along with classic seventies prog rock and fuzzed up psyche rock. fans of the instrumental stoner psyche sounds of the likes of earthless will just adore this release. its a real thunderous assault on the ears with pounding drums, fuzzed up bass and howling guitar solos flying all over the place. quite simply this is as good as anything you would find on the legendary mans ruin label and maybe even better again. modern psyche rock just doesnt get any better than this. may 2008

the wonderful debut album from dublin based outfit on the transduction label. the band is fronted by former holy ghost father alan blighe. this is quite possibly one of the finest and most diverse collections of trad tinged irish folk you will hear in quite some time. its not often you can use the words trad, post rock, pogues and prog rock in the same review but this here album has a bit of all that and much much more. from track to track you could be listening to the pogues and then suddenly planxty appear before hypnotic guitars take you off on a totally prog like post rock experience. i simply love albums that challenge both your ears and mind whilst listening but the other beauty of this one here is the fact that every single listen gives you something else completely different back. dont let it be twenty years before people realise just how good this band are. may 2008

TINDERSTICKS - THE HUNGRY SAW [special offer, normally retails at €18.99]
the first album in nearly five years from the tindersticks. the band are stripped down to three core members including vocalist stuar staples, guitarist neil fraser and david boulter on keys. the album is fully augmented with lots of trademark strings and mild orchestral vibes. this album is probably their most sixties sounding record so far in their career with a sound falling somewhere between a more sombre walker brothers meets the early sounds of bryan ferry and the darkness of nick caves boatmans call. the more stripped down sound seems to suit the band a lot more as the songs are less layered in darkness this time but having a much more spacial feel to it. the production on the album has a lovely sixties almost raw feel about it with the burst of brass giving it a somewhat stax like soulful feel from time to time. long time fans of their earlier albums will be in heaven when they hear this and i can also see quite a few new converts to their sound this time around too. april 2008

album number three from one of irelands finest underground rock outfits. is it just me or do these guys just get better and better every time they enter a studio. this is another cracking collection of blistering post punk sounds simply bursting with energy and guitar heavy violence. hidden beneath the fuzz and aggression are some of the most melodic tracks this pair have released so far coming across like leatherface jamming with shellac or the jesus lizard. features eleven short sharp blasts of pure underground rock brilliance. fans of the early sounds of grunge rock ala tad or mudhoney and even the caustic sounds of labels like amphetamine reptile or touch and go will absolutely adore this album. truly outstanding stuff. may 2008

BON IVER - FOR EMMA FOREVER AGO [THIS ALBUM IS RELEASED ON FRIDAY THE 16TH OF MAY]
bon iver is songwriter justin vernon and this is his debut release on 4ad. the album was recorded in total isolation in a cabin in wisconsin and you can really feel the intimate and at times almost wintery atmosphere. its a beautiful collection of simple lo fi folk ballads but his voice gives the album a totally soulful feel. its got a similar rustic quality to early bonnie prince billy, songs ohia or phosphorescent buts it the voice that makes if differ from all of the above. vernon makes superb use of multilayered vocals making it sound like the beach boys doing acoustic gospel music. this is one of those rare slow building quiet gems that takes a few listens to really discover its true beauty.

ATLAS SOUND - LET THE BLIND LEAD THOSE WHO CAN SEE BUT CANNOT FEEL [WITH BONUS DISC]
solo album from deerhoof frontman bradford cox now on the 4ad label. the album was compiled by cox using a selection of different sources from found sounds to old cassettes to music boxes and all sorts of laptop sampling software. the end result is much more musical than you might imagine considering the source material. cox adds beats, guitars and vocals over most of the tracks to create something that at times sounds a bit like animal collective covering classic shoegazing sounds. he multitracks his voice over pulstating sampled live drums, organ sounds and lots of looping sound effects. imagine if the flaming lips were to record an entire album on a laptop. its an incredibly enjoyable album with a lovely warm feel to it particularly with the addition of live guitars and bass. this album was released earlier this year on the kranky label but this new version on 4ad comes in a completely different sleeve and also features a limited edition six track bonus cd. may 2008

ADEM - TAKES [THIS ALBUM IS RELEASED ON FRIDAY THE 16TH OF MAY]
features a collection of remixes and reinterpretations of some of adems favourite tracks from the last ten years. features his versions and remixes of bedside table by bedhead, oh my lover by pj harvey, slide by lisa germano, loro by pinback, hotellounge by deus, to cure a weakling child by aphex twin, tears are in your eyes by yo la tengo, starla by smashing pumpkins, gamera by tortoise, unravel by bjork, invisible man by the breeders and finally laser beam by low. the album is a rather excellent kind of lo fi folky take on some classic underground tunes calling to mind the intimate folk sounds of the likes of james yorkston or king creosote. a lot of the tracks are only barely recognizable from the originals which i think is always a good thing with covers projects of this kind.

a real bumper pack of rarities from the legendary gods of punk funk minimalism on the domino label. the album features their first three eps released on the 99 records label way back in the early eighties. features all the tracks from their debut self titled ep along with the optimo ep and the successive reflexes ep. the album also features 10 previously unreleased bonus tracks and heaps of live recordings. features their biggest hit cavern which features the classic sampled bassline that was to feature on melle mels white lines track. this bands music still has a massive influence on punk funk and minimal dance music today and you will hear everyone from lcd soundsystem to the rapture to the animal collective citing them as a major influence on them. still sounds beautifully fresh and funky as it did over 25 years ago.

reissue of this classic album from way back in 1993 from one of the most influential indie rock bands around. it was to be the last sebadoh album to feature eric gaffney and so in turn was the last album to feature the classic lineup of gaffney, lou barlow and jason loewenstein. the original seventeen tracks are pretty much shared between the three of them as far as songwriting goes. the original album now comes with a whopping 15 bonus tracks featuring lots or rarities, b sides and previously unreleased tracks.

ENDA REILLY - OXYGEN 21
the debut album from this dublin based singer songwriter. now heres a folk album with a real twist in its tail. whilst reilly definitely dips into the more psychedelic side of folk and folk rock he also incorporates lots of very very melodic psyche pop sounds. the end result sounds something like john martyn or tim buckley on some very strong halucinogenics. having said all that its not actually as strange sounding as it may be on paper. there is plenty of classic irish folk influences ala christy moore maybe mixed with a bit of syd barrett. its definitely well worth your attention. may 2008

23 track collection from this nashville based street musician and his backing band on the arhoolie label. recorded by chris strachwitz in nashville in 1962 and 1963. the album is a wonderful collection of goodtime jazzy blues sounds featuring some awesome brass and skiffle influences. its got a real goodtime jug band feel about it sounding more like some old new orleans jazz band. comes with liner notes from arhoolie owner chris strachwitz. 1995

the honest jons label are back with a wonderful new themed series of releases similar in scope to their london is the place for me series. this new series concentrates on recordings made in london by west african musicians. the majority of recordings featured here were made for the london based zonophone label and have now been beautifully remastered for cd. the album comes with a superb full colour booklet with lots of interesting liner notes and some really amazing old photos. the sounds on the album are very much rhythm based pieces varying from pure vocal call and response field songs to full band pieces with drums and percussion aplenty. may 2008

Road Records is based in Dublin, Ireland and is a totally independent music store and mail order service specialising in indie, alternative, underground rock, electronica, punk, reggae, country, folk, blues and whatever else takes our fancy. The store is run by two human beings, Julie and Dave, so you are guaranteed a personal touch when you shop with us.
