-Our Favourite Record Of The Day LOW ANTHEM - OH MY GOD CHARLIE DARWIN the second full length album from the low anthem and their first for their new label bella union. the album features a rather beautiful collection of laid back rootsy folk sounds and the odd bit of full on barroom rootsy rock n roll. its a hauntingly intimate collection of mostly acoustic based sounds with some lovely slide guitar and fiddle action. the album has a lovely rustic feel about it with some gentle country vibes comparable to the likes of whiskeytown and the alt country scene that followed them. its also got hints of the likes of red house painters, my morning jacket and even elliott smith. its one of those rare quiet gems thats both perfectly sombre and strangely uplifting at the same time. comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. june 2009 bella union cd €13.99 (click here to buy)
-Our Album Of The Week WILCO - WILCO [THE ALBUM] wilco return with their seventh studio album. produced by the band themselves and jim scott. recorded in roundhead studios in auckland and then finished in their own loft studios in chicago. jim o rourke has now departed so the band on this one is jeff tweedy, john striratt, glen kotche, mikael jorgensen, nels cline and pat sansone. its very much an album that sees wilco head back to their older rootsy almost melodic pop sound again with the majority of the tracks clocking in at the four minute mark. they seem to have ditched the more experimental sounds in favour of just good old style solid guitar driven roots sounds. there are a couple of rather beautiful laid back ballads thrown in complete with some awesome slide guitar action but on the whole this is wilco back in melodic rock teritory with an album of perfectly hummable roots rock anthems. june 2009 nonesuch cd €14.99 (click here to buy)
-Our Album Of The Month GRIZZLY BEAR - VECKATIMEST [special offer, normally retails at €15.99] grizzly bear return with a truly stunning new album on the warp label. these guys have been hinting at greatness for quite a while now but this new album reaches a whole new level altogether. the album really benefits for a truly lush production and the addition of big orchestral sounds. they are still a band that vocally remind me of the summer pop sounds of the beach boys but there the comparisons end. featuring lots of quirky and infectiously catchy laid back pop songs with lots of electric piano and sixties like guitar sounds. its one of those albums with some many layers that each listen delivers a totally different experience. if a bit of sixties tinged indie pop and four part vocal harmonies are your thing then this could be an early contender for album of the year. comes in a digipack sleeve. may 2009 warp cd €12.99 (click here to buy)
-Our Single Of The Week TALULAH DOES THE HULA - BAD BOYFRIEND AND THOSE GIRLS finally the debut single from this new dublin based outfit. its a double a sided single featuring bad boyfriend and those girls. the band features former members of the chalets and neosupervital. the single comes rather beautifully packaged in a screen printed card sleeve. printed on recycled card and all copies are individually hand numbered. limited to only 200 copies in total. the ep features two superb slices of guitar driven indie pop with a hint of that classic sixties motown girlgroup sound and a wee bit of early blondie. june 2009 please note all our signed copies are now sold out own label cds €2.99 (click here to buy) - Other Highlights This Week
AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR - AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR the debut album from this northern irish based post rock outfit on the smalltown america label. the album features some truly thunderous and rocking post rock sounds coming across like the meeting of don caballero, japanese outfits mono or lite and fellow irishmen the redneck manifesto. its full of intricate guitar based post rock workouts with plenty of fuzzed up explosive moments. its mostly an album that concentrates the heavier side of post rock with a total emphasis on the word rock. a total sonic blast of weird time sequences and clever intricate guitar work layered over pounding drum passages. wonderfully exciting stuff. may 2009 smalltown america cd €14.99 (click here to buy)
ADEBISI SHANK - SELF TITLED [LIMITED EDITION 10 INCH VINYL PRESSING] the debut album from this irish based instrumental three piece now on the new irish label the richter collective. the album features some superbly explosive post rock meets metal edged math rock sounds coming on like early iron maiden jamming with shellac and don caballero. featuring the most intricate rhythm section laying down disjointed and motorik beats for layers of fuzzed up guitar solo action. fans of the likes of early battles, shellac, oxxes, don caballero, trans am and the likes will simply adore this collection. its all played at breakneck speed by three very very talented young men. the album was recorded in baltimore by the legendary j robbins from jawbox and burning airlines. the album was originally released on cd only in 2008 so this is the first time this album has been available on vinyl. limited edition 10 inch pressing. june 2009 the richter collective 10" €10.99 (click here to buy)
CAMERA OBSCURA - LETS GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY [DOUBLE CD REISSUE] album number 3 from one of glasgows finest indie pop bands. what makes these guys stand out is their total love of sixties pop sounds particularly the sounds of motown and the phil spector era. not only did tracyanne campbell write all the songs on this album but she possesses one of the sexiest voices on the planet. bittersweet love songs that will put a smile on your face. you get everything from the country tinged dory previn to the blistering sixties pop opener lloyd im ready to be heartbroken. dont be scared by all the pop references as these guys write some of the most clever songs you will hear all year. just one listen and we guarantee you will be in love with them. 10 track album on the elefant label. originally released in 2006. the album now comes packaged with a bonus cd single featuring the tracks lloyd im ready to be heartbroken, phil and don, roman holiday and also a video track for i love my jean. june 2009 elefant 2cd €15.99 (click here to buy)
FLIPPER - GENERIC FLIPPER the debut flipper album now reissued and fully remastered. the album now comes with brand new liner notes by kris novoselic from nirvana, kris is also now a member of the newly reformed band. the album was originally released way back in 1982 and features the legendary and rather seminal single sex bomb. still comes in the very distinctive yellow sleeve. its still one of those classic early post punk records from a band that very quickly realised that punk rock didnt have to be played at 100 mph, its still loud, raw and in your face though. its great to have this album back in print again. features ever, life is cheap, shed no tears, i saw you shine, way of the world, life, nothing, living for depression and sex bomb. june 2009 domino cd €9.99 (click here to buy)
GENTLEMAN LOSERS - DUSTLAND finnish siblings samu and ville kuukka return with a long overdue follow up to their rather excellent self titled album on the city centre offices label from 2006. its another superbly beautiful blend of the live organic sounds and gentle electronic trickery. if anything this has a little more live instrumentation on it compared to the previous album and sees the introduction of scratchy guitars to create some kind of doom jazz take on the sounds of the godspeed or do make say think. its still a very dark slow moving collection of sounds with lots of haunting piano layered over some lush strings and all manner of scratchy sound effects. these guys really are in a league of their own and sound like nothing else you have heard before. its truly stunning and we think just one listen will have you hooked to their sombre slow ways forever. june 2009 city centre offices lp €18.99 (click here to buy)
LOW ANTHEM - OH MY GOD CHARLIE DARWIN the second full length album from the low anthem and their first for their new label bella union. the album features a rather beautiful collection of laid back rootsy folk sounds and the odd bit of full on barroom rootsy rock n roll. its a hauntingly intimate collection of mostly acoustic based sounds with some lovely slide guitar and fiddle action. the album has a lovely rustic feel about it with some gentle country vibes comparable to the likes of whiskeytown and the alt country scene that followed them. its also got hints of the likes of red house painters, my morning jacket and even elliott smith. its one of those rare quiet gems thats both perfectly sombre and strangely uplifting at the same time. comes in a lovely card gatefold sleeve. june 2009 bella union cd €13.99 (click here to buy)
PHOENIX - WOLFGANG AMADEUS PHOENIX the return of this ultra cool and highly sophisticated french pop outfit with their new album on the v2 label. its another fine collection of seventies tinged guitar pop sounds. its damn near impossible not to get sucked in by these guys with their hook laden guitar pop coming across at times like some space rock take on the likes of elo mixed with the slightly glam pop sounds of some roxy music tunes. its totally hip shaking and very clever at the same time without ever getting too cheesy. june 2009 v2 cd €15.99 (click here to buy)
TIDWELL, CORTNEY - BOYS nashville based songwriter cortney tidwell returns with her second full length album and her first for the city slang label. the album features a really lovely blend of slightly country tinged folky sounds and mellow electronic beats. there are moments of mazzy star like ambience along with the slighly kooky singer songwriter style of early cat power but tidwell stands out a bit more with her use of keyboards and electronic effects. deep in the mix you can hear the influence of some early country vibes complete with slide guitar. its a great big melting pot of sounds fronted by one of the most beautiful voices around at the moment. the album also features a guest spot by jim james from my morning jacket. june 2009 city slang cd €15.99 (click here to buy) -Cds and Lps under €10.00 Its the bargain basement, these titles change regularly and stock is limited. -Preorder And Special Offers Here you can find special offers on upcoming albums, basically the more orders we get the better the price we can get for you from our suppliers. -Entering your address - Please read this before ordering -Dave's Flickr photo page -How To Place An Order -Our Independent Irish Catalogue Our extensive collection of independently released Irish music
A Brief History. Road Records is based in Dublin, Ireland and is a totally independent music store and mail order service specialising in indie, alternative, underground rock, electronica, punk, reggae, country, folk, blues and whatever else takes our fancy. The store is run by two human beings, Julie and Dave, so you are guaranteed a personal touch when you shop with us.
KEEP INDIE STORES ALIVE (not just us, all of them) - support your local store and not those damned "multinationals" and "dreaded supermarkets" who know nothing about real music. We are well aware that music can be purchased from many online retailers these days at cut down prices but lets face it, who wants a world without small dedicated shops all over the world, with staff that know a thing or two about music. Do we want to spend the rest of our music shopping days stuck in front of a computer, think about it, never getting any form of human contact whatsoever. Small bands and labels will know what we mean when we say you need us as much as we need you, so think about it the next time you press the buy button with places like cdwow, play and those other evil below cost sellers.
